Cartoon Symphony

Seeing sound? Yes, this is the talent of local artist, Tanja Ackerman, a Synesthetic Artist.
The Bunker Cartoon Gallery’s “Cartoon Symphony” exhibition is Tanja’s latest body of work, drawing inspiration from Cartoon soundtracks. In this exhibition, you will experience cartoon imagery and music in a completely unique way. Tanja has extended her work beyond the traditional cartoon stereotypes, portraying not only superheroes and pop culture but musicians as well.
Many of us share the experience of a special cartoon character, be it heroic, inspirational or comical. They have the power to transport us back to that time of childhood and those wonderful memories.
The process of observing music and natural sounds is described by Tanja: “I see music. When I hear music, birdsong, etc., I literally see moving colours, patterns and textures in my visual field. I have been seeing sound for as long as I can remember.” This ability is known as Synaesthesia. It is a gift in which stimulation of one sense (auditory) leads to a sensory experience in a different sense (visual).
