Behind The Lines

The National Cartoon Gallery will once again be hosting bi-annual favourite Behind The Lines in the Bunker gallery. This travelling exhibition is curated by the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House in Canberra and celebrates the role of political cartoonists in Australia and the power their drawings have in contributing to our daily political and social discourse.

This year’s theme ‘a dog’s breakfast’ politely describes 2020’s mix of disruption and uncertainty via a collection of 104 cartoons from 36 cartoonists published in a broad range of media outlets, including one from the USA. Fortunately, our cartoonists have also captured moments of good and humour amid the drama to complete a collection that summarises the year that was.

MoAD Director Daryl Karp explains “Nothing about 2020 has been ‘business as usual’.  Never has a free and accurate media seemed more important, and never have we needed our cartoonists so much.”

This year adds new dimensions to the exhibition with the inclusion of an AV component and an interactive game for all the family as well as digital gif cartoons.
