To be known Nationally and Internationally as the home of Australian cartooning and the number one cultural destination on the Coffs Coast.
The National Cartoon Gallery offers a distinctive and unique connection to cartooning in Australia. It is the only Cartoon Gallery in Australia and its collection of over 24,000 cartoons exist for our cartoonists and our audiences – to comprehend the past, to navigate the present, and as a potent avenue for imagining the future. Supporting cartoonists and placing access to cartoons for audiences is at the heart of who we are informs the Gallery’s exhibitions and public programs.
The National Cartoon Gallery contributes positively to the cultural diversity, social wellbeing and economic life in Coffs Harbour and the surrounding region. The Gallery’s purpose is to provide access to the field of cartooning in a regional centre that focuses on vibrancy, social and cultural impact and cultural tourism.
Cartoon Appreciation: Our exhibition program creates a cultural experience that stimulates conversations, is thought provoking and ignites curiosity.
Significant moments and events are captured in cartoon form that show irreverence or seriousness. They can create laughter or challenge viewers to question.
They invite audience engagement.
Social and Cultural Impact: Our exhibitions encourage an appreciation of cartoons as a form of creative expression, be that social or political. They also provide a greater understanding of cartooning as a profession.
Cultural Tourism: As a major regional hub with a diverse cultural landscape, Coffs Harbour is a tourist destination, and the Gallery provides access to a unique cultural experience with the WWII Bunker and cartoon collection as part of the region’s cultural tourism offering.
Supporting Cartoonists: Cartoonists in Australia have limited opportunities to exhibit and showcase their work, to continue to build their professional reputation and to have a sustainable practice. The National Cartoon Gallery plays an important role by working with cartoonists, supporting them to develop their practice, and providing them access to audiences.
To provide access to cartoons that inspire, enrich and inform the community; enhance visitor experiences through our exhibitions and events; and foster an appreciation of cartooning as a profession.
We believe that cartoons are for everyone – for visitors of all ages, abilities, genders and cultures.
